for Integrated Sanitation Management in Eastern and Southern Africa
(UCDISM)
On ISM (Integrated
Sanitation Management)
University of
Siegen is happy to announce the launch of the EU-Project:
“University Capacity Development for Integrated Sanitation
Management in Eastern and Southern Africa (UCDISM)” from
January 2009. This project is funded by the European Union under the
9th European Development Fund (EDF), ACP-EU Cooperation Programme in
Higher Education (EDULINK) and scheduled from January 2009 to December
2011.
The three-year
project is coordinated by University of Siegen and its implementing
partners include:
-
University of Dar Es Saalam, Tanzania (UDSM)
-
Kenyatta University, Kenya (KU)
-
Makerere University, Uganda (MAK)
-
University of Zambia, Zambia (UMZA)
The programme
builds on the International Masters programme in Integrated Watershed
Management (www.iwmnet.eu), established at Kenyatta University in 2006. It
is designed to strengthen training and research capacity at
universities in Eastern and Southern Africa in sanitation management.
The projects aim is thus to improve water and sanitation governance
with emphasis on establishing an international practice-oriented
Masters programme in Integrated Sanitation Management (ISM) at UDSM in
cooperation with KU. It plan to upgrade all partner
universities’ capacity through regional knowledge transfer as
well as training of professionals in project management.
Planned activities
for capacity development are implemented around three components:
- The Master programme in ISM
is specifically built on the existing regional Master programme on
Integrated Watershed Management (IWM) at Kenyatta University (KU) and
will be established at UDSM with contributions from all four regional
partners in Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.
- A working group on ‘Applied
Research’ will guide the master thesis research
focusing on topics of ISM. The programme shall formulate an overall
research goal that is updated every year; it assures a continuous
development of topics as well as guarantees research quality. It is
planned for identifying supervisors from at least two partner
universities in order to initiate regional research cooperation.
- A regional centres of excellence in
ISM will be built through workshops and the linkage between
the universities and practitioners. They will be organised at all
partner countries except Germany for university staff members. They
provide an opportunity for participants to refresh their knowledge on
project management, implementation, financing and advertising. Such
workshops provide opportunities to develop cooperation and
collaboration. These centres of excellence for ISM in the region will
enhance cooperation between the sanitation sector and partner companies.
